Make It The Best It Can Be

"You see, you can't please everyone so you got to please yourself." Rick Nelson wrote this lyric after getting booed off the stage at a big show at Madison Square Garden in 1971 because he wasn't just playing his old hits. The audience wanted to keep him in a box and he refused to stay there.

Since the vast majority of singer/songwriters are not rich or famous, how do we define and measure success? Nelson supplied the answer...first you have to set a high personal standard and then you have to live up to it EVERY TIME you write a song.

It helps to have a circle of trusted peers who can give you accurate feedback on how you're doing. You need to be clear on what you want to say and know that you are saying it to the best of your ability. Of course, if you manage to have a "hit" or two, that doesn't hurt.
